Since I
first created this concept last November as a TV series idea the characters
have been developing. However once I initially started writing the script for
the 10-minute adaptation the characters really took shape. Here are some synopses of
the main characters that I have been working on alongside writing the script.
Oliver (Ollie) Jacob Edwards
Ollie is just a normal guy who has had greatness
thrust upon him!
Oliver Jacob
Edwards born 7th August 2028 in Central London, to Jacob and Marie
Edwards. He grew up in a small terraced house in the centre of London with his
Mum, Dad and little Sister Emma. He had quite a normal start to life, two
healthy, loving parents, a pet cat named white socks (called such due to his
four white paws) and his little sister who he adored. Like most children he
didn’t love school but he enjoyed seeing his friends and had a natural aptitude
for science. However all this normality began to disintegrate as the honeybee
disappeared.
Ollie is quite
a nervous young man but with an optimistic outlook on life, which is very rare
to find in such harsh times. He strongly believes all the stories about the ‘Wing
Worshipers’, the people who have found a way to bring the flowers back through
hand pollination, but many around him do not. He is positive that there is
something better out there; looking out on the disaster that is not London he
feels sad at how what was once such a great and powerful city has crumbled
because of the honeybee. Ollie believes that this travesty is mankind’s own
doing. His view is, the bees survived for millions of years before men started
interfering, so this must be where the problem has come from. He believes that
there is hope for the planet and that all can be restored but people need to
start treating the earth with respect, rather than chopping down all the trees,
covering vast landscapes with concrete and polluting the air.
Ollie’s Mum
Marie died of The Affliction 2047 having been bed ridden for months. Shortly
after his Father Jacob committed suicide, he could not deal with the loss of
his dear Marie and being unable to provide for his children, the sight of Emma
getting frail tipped him over the edge. He hung himself from the beams in his
bedroom, Ollie found him early one morning.
Ollie is
very protective of his little sister Emma, they had a very close bond from the
day she was born. Ollie taught Emma to read and write as there were no schools
by the time she was due to go, he believed that it was really important for her
to have these skills. She is all he has since the death of their parents and he
would do anything for her. With his Mother and Father both gone Ollie is left
as he sole carer and when she begins to get very sick he knows he must do
something, he cant lose another person from his life.
Ollie had a
best friend called Mark. Mark lived a few doors down from the Edwards family
and since the day they met when they were five he and Ollie were inseparable.
Mark’s family believed strongly in the Wing Worshipers, and they decided to
leave London in search for them as soon as things started to get bad. They set
out North in hope to find the colony rumoured to have set up there.
Imogen
Imogen
became the natural leader of The Wing Worshipers as her parents, the founders,
stepped aside. Imogen is very kind natured, she oozes with confidence and
beauty. She is spiritual and believes that the bees will come back to the
planet one day but is still very level headed with it. She is amazing in a
crisis and always knows what to do, she never lets her emotions get the best of
her.
Although
she is the ‘Leader’ of the people she never uses her authority unnecessarily
and generally everyone gets on with the greatest of ease within the Garden of
Eden.
Brennan
Brennan and
his parents joined the colony right at the beginning. Growing up in such a
beautiful place filled Brennan with kindness and surrounded his life with
serenity. He is a very calm and laid back man with a great passion for helping
Mother Nature. He spends most of his time looking after the younger people of
the colony and any new members that may arrive, although no one new ever
arrived anymore. He is also known to have a bit of a soft spot for Quinn.
Quinn
Quinn came
across the colony one day as she was wandering the moors after she had lost her
family to The Affliction. She had heard the stories of the Wing Worshipers, she
hoped they were true but didn’t know what to believe. She fitted in with the
colony instantly even if she is one of their more feisty members. Since living
with the colony she has regained all her faith in the future, she strongly
believes that the bees will return one day, in fact she is one of the strongest
believers living in the Garden of Eden.
Emma
Emma Jane
Edwards, born March 4th 2034 in Central London to Jacob and Marie.
Emma always looked up to her big brother Ollie he is her favourite person. She
loved the times when he gave her reading lessons, he always made her feel
clever and special. Majority of her life was spent in a world without bees and
she could not remember what it was like before the world fell apart. Because of
this she loved finding photos, dried flowers and doing drawings of how the
world used to be, she documented all this in a journal which she gives to Ollie
before he leaves on his quest to find the Wing Worshipers.
Grace
Grace is
one of the best pollinators who reside in the garden, her delicate touch
produces the best flowers. She spends most of her time in the conservatories
tending to the flowers and crops. She is a very passionate person and is viewed
as quite emotional by some of the other Wing Worshipers. She doesn’t really believe
that the bees will return this is why she spends majority of her time
pollinating and teaching others how to do it properly.
